Harvey, Sam, Oliver, Megan, Isabelle and Marcus were the first trophy winners of the new year, and can be seen proudly holding their awards for September 2009. Many congratulations to them - I wonder who will be collecting the trophies at the end of October?

May's Magnificent Maths Champs

Very well done to Jemma, Kallum, Demi, Connor, Hannah, Anabel and Jacob who were nominated by their teachers as the mathematicians of May 2009. As July is a 'short' month in terms of the school calendar, there will be just one more set of trophy winners, who will be rewarded for their hard work and attainment in June.

Stop, Look, Listen and Think

The Smart Brothers brought their collection of zebra crossings, kerbs, juggling sticks and unicycles to entertain and educate the whole school in basic road safety. By the end of the presentation, the children were very clear as to what they must do if they have to cross the road; 'Stop, Look, Listen and Think'.

Book Week Assembly

The final week of term was certainly not dull. The Lego day was a highlight in itself - in addition there was the Easter Egg Hunt, disco and Book Week. Well done to Ms Turner for organising such a successful event. A variety of poets, authors and performers visited over the course of the week, and it was all rounded off with the children dressing up as their favourite book character on the last day of term. Hopefully, you should see photographs of everyone who participated below.

Term 4's achievement trophy winners can be seen proudly clutching their trophies - well done to Megan, Phoenix, Matthew, Charlotte, Libby and James. The observant amongst you will notice that there are no Squirrels to be seen. Their champion, Tom, was busy having some teeth extracted - hope you're feeling better, Tom, and that you had enough teeth left for your Easter eggs.

Easter 7s Football Tournament

Vigo's attempts to retain the trophy they won last year eventually came to nothing, but it certainly was not for the want of trying. On a cold, wet Saturday, the team took to the pitch in their first game against Rosherville. Kicking downhill in the first half, we were evenly matched with our opponents, and the 0-0 half time score was a fair reflection on the game. The game continued in a similar vein in the second half until, a minute before full time, Rosherville's only real attempt on goal led to the only goal of the game.

With two of the five teams qualifying for the semi-finals, we knew that we still had every opportunity to progress, so the players were doubly determined as they lined up against New Ash Green. This time, the match was played on the 'big pitch', and it certainly took its toll on both sets of players who covered a tremendous amount of ground. A couple of chances fell to each team, but we were indebted to George who pulled off an excellent save to keep the scores level, and Luke who put in a very solid performance in defence.

Last year, Vigo had played, and beaten, St Botolph's in the semi-final, this year both teams knew that a victory against the other would give them a very strong chance of progressing. Back to the sloping pitch, and once again Vigo kicked downhill in the first half, and once again, the defences held sway. The second half saw a very high standard of football - St Botolph's moving the ball around rapidly, Vigo countering, with Mitchell and Ciaran putting in outstanding performances. However, it was St Botolph's who came closest - a header from a corner was tipped onto the bar by George, bouncing down on the line and away from danger.

Vigo's final match was against Kings Farm - we knew that only victory would give us a chance of progressing. This time, we had the benefit of playing on the flat, good-sized pitch, and it certainly brought the best out of our players. A break from Adam on the right wing led to a chance for Oliver which just went over the bar, and excellent work by Jake kept the pressure on the King's Farm defence. It was more good work from Adam that led to our goal - a pass to Danny gave him enough time and space to hit the ball home from the edge of the box. Determined defence from the whole team kept Kings Farm's chances to a minimum, and the final whistle was greeted with euphoria and relief.

As we had guessed, scores from other matches meant that we just missed out on qualification for the semi-finals - however our third placing was a definite achievement. If we had turned one of the draws into wins, or drawn the game we lost...

Many congratulations to the team - the year 6s amongst them finished on a high note, and all should be very proud of their efforts. Many thanks to the (rather wet) parents who supported the team so well, and to all the parents and carers who have helped out this year.

Netball

Congratulations to Vigo's netball team for two excellent victories in the last few weeks.

The first victory was against Borough Green on Wednesday 18th March. Even though they had to play hi-five netball (something which they have never played before) it didn't faze the members of the team as their efforts lead to a 4-1 victory. Well done to everyone who played.

The second victory was against Riverview on Wednesday 25th March. Despite the windy conditions, the shooters were on fine form and scored 7 superb goals. Final score: 7 - 1. Well done to all who played and many thanks to mums for providing transport.

Football Match against St Joseph's

Just to prove that we are not the whipping boys (or girls) of Kent primary football, Wednesday's game was followed by a victory against St Joseph's Convent School in Gravesend. George's super strike early on was enough to see off the opposition, and to boost confidence ahead of the Easter 7s tournament. You'll see photos of most of the children giving their all for the cause (Luke is still literally licking his wounds), whilst others took measures to ward off the wicked Gravesend wind...

Football Match against Borough Green

The football team conducted themselves with great determination and spirit as they suffered a rather heavy defeat against the bigger, stronger representatives of Borough Green. Despite the one-sided nature of the scoreline (9-1), they never gave up, and, right until the final whistle, they battled both to stem the flow of goals conceded, and to score themselves. We are really proud of their efforts - here are some photos of yesterday's action.

Lion's Club Hospice assembly

Nicola from the hospice visited the school on Monday to tell us about the work that is done by her organisation to help seriously ill people. Her power-point presentation detailed how their patients are cared for and the demands that this has on their budget. She also reminded the children that the soft toys can be bought from the office at £1 each, with the proceeds going to the hospice.

Comic Relief Day

True to form, the children and parents of Vigo Village School responding magnificently to this year's Red Nose Day appeal. Not only did they throw themselves enthusiastically into the instruction of 'Crazy Hair', they also raised in excess of £250 - oh, and there was the joke telling competition as well.

Mrs Mower says "Goodbye"

Children, parents and staff saw off Mrs Mower in a suitably emotional addition to Friday's achievement assembly. First of all, the children from her class read out their messages for Mrs Mower.
Then the school watched a compilation of the photos that had been taken of the Caterpillars during their time with Mrs Mower.

Finally, Mrs Mower was presented with presents from the staff and children of the school, and more messages from year 1.

We would like to thank Mrs Mower for all she has done for the children over the last three months, and wish her well in all of her future endeavours.

Netball at the O2 Arena

On Sunday 22nd February, some children from Vigo’s netball team went to the O2 Arena to watch England v Jamaica.

It was the first test match of the season so expectations were high.

The game was fast but England lead all the way.

Final score.... 67, 54 - a victory for England!

Dick Wittington comes to Vigo

To round of a week of Christmas spectaculars (parties, lunches etc) the children were treated to a performance of the pantomime Dick Wittington.

To much noise and hilarity, the cast put on a tremendous performance and kept everyone royally entertained.

As you can see, each member of the cast had a variety of roles to perform, and carried off each one with great skill.

Hopefully the pictures will also give you an idea of the good time that was had by all of the children.

End-of-Term Assembly

The last assembly of the term is always an eventful one, and today's was no exception. As with every 'Friday assembly', we found out which house had gleaned the most team points over the course of the week, and then learnt that the Owls had once again won the attendance award for the week, and were presented with the famous Snowy Bear. We then found out who had won the weekly certificates, and waited to hear who would receive the special awards.
First to be presented were the Mathematician of the Month trophies. Below is a picture of the successful recipients - Aidan, Sam, Emily, Sally-anne, Eloise, Brooke and Dominic.

Next up were the termly Achievement Trophy winners. This time the happy group consisted of Zach, Ella, Radiyah, Hannah, Alex, Jordan and Caitlin. Many congratulations to them.

Finally, the children waited to learn who this term's House Point Trophy would go to. Perhaps inspired by the knowledge that they are the only team who have yet to appear on the winners' boards in the entrance area, it was Ash who triumphed - the only house that exceeded 5000 team points for the complete term. Well done to all of Ash - here are the team captains proudly raising the trophy.

Before the children left, special certificates were presented to James and Joseph - both were richly deserved.

A Visit from Santa

The infants were treated to a surprise visit from a certain Mr S Claus this morning. Wielding a particulary large bag and a bell, he found time between his myriad of Christmas duties to visit the Hedgehogs, Caterpillars and Owls.

It didn't take long for the children to realise that the bag contained a present for each of them, and they gratefully tore into the paper.

Santa was a little worried that his reindears may have been getting anxious waiting in the car park, so with a final 'Ho, ho, ho,' he was gone.

Dreaming of a White Christmas?

The children and staff of Vigo woke up to a lovely surprise on Wednesday morning. A flurry of snow had descended on the village, and everyone made the most of the unexpected opportunity to practise their snowman-making skills.

Is it too much to ask that we get another covering in a couple of weeks' time?

Infant Nativity

The infants rounded off a hectic week with their final performance of 'Born in a Barn' - this year's nativity. Having entertained the pre-school children as well as the senior citizens earlier in the week, this was their second evening production. Despite a number of coughs and colds, the children put on a tremen-dous show - one that family and friends were all very proud of.

We would like to thank everyone who has assisted with the performances - the children certainly looked fantastic - as well as the Year 5 choir, accompanied on the piano by Mr Jiggens.

Christmas Bazaar

Vigo Village School PTFA once again organised a fantastic Christmas bazaar that was enjoyed by pupils past and present, as well as their families. A grand total of £2800 was raised - money that will go directly to enhancing the educational experiences of the children at Vigo.

The event was opened by the school choir. Accompanied on the piano by Mr Jiggens, they performed five of the best-loved Christmas carols. The conclusion of the performance was a cue for everyone to spread across the school and participate in a variety of games and activities.

It was great to see pupils and teachers from the past entering into the spirit of the day.

As usual, the paint-facing stall had one of the longer queues. Here is Amber sporting one of the butterfly designs.

Many thanks to everyone who gave of their time and effort - it really was a terrific day. Particular thanks, of course, go to Mrs Emma Henderson and her loyal band of helpers, without whom the event would simply not be possible.

Children in Need Day

Well done to everyone who dressed up for, and contributed towards, Children in Need Day, which this year fell on 14th November. Children, parents and staff raised a tantalising £199.46 - all of which will go towards good causes across the country.

As you can see from the photographs, we adopted a stripy theme for the day - our stripiest pupils (as voted for by the School Council) can be seen clutching their Pudsey prizes.

Year 6 visit Knole Park

On Thursday 2nd October, Badgers class visited Knole Park to learn more about The Tudors.
The day was spent dressing up in costumes and walking around part of Knole House learning more about that time in History. The children learnt about the Sackville family as well as many other significant people from The Tudor Times. The children also learnt about a range of Tudor Artefacts in a Tudor workshop.

Year 6 Science Workshop

Year 6 took part in a science workshop where they learnt all about the importance of hygiene in the kitchen. “Mr Clean”, “Mrs Cross” and “Mr Cold” gave 15 minute workshops on how your hands should be cleaned, how food can become contaminated and how food should be stored in a fridge correctly.

Cycling Proficiency

Year 6 have been learning how to ride their bicycle safely because they have been taken part in their cycling proficiency. Well done to the Badgers as they all passed!

Carroty Wood

Squirrels class visited Carroty Wood where they participated in several adventurous activities. They left school at 5pm and arrived to a delicious bowl of spaghetti bolognaise and chocolate ice-cream courtesy of a fantastic chef! Afterwards the children went swimming and spent the rest of the evening competing in a quiz which Mr Barber lead.

The following day was spent abseiling, firing arrows during archery and getting rather muddy on the low ropes. Again the evening was spent swimming and playing bingo and other various quizzes that Mr Barber had up his sleeve.

Unfortunately on the last day the weather was very wet but that didn’t dampen their spirits as the children went through a maze trying to find pieces of a jigsaw which spelt out a phrase.
All the children returned happy, but very tired.

Easter 7s Football Tournament

Against all the odds, Vigo Village School football team returned from the Easter 7s tournament at St John’s R.C. School clutching the winner’s trophy. Bearing in mind that the team had yet to register a draw, let alone a win all season, and had accumulated a grand total of one goal all season, this really was a remarkable achievement.

Things did not start particularly auspiciously – despite a sterling effort and a missed penalty, the team played out a goalless draw in their first match against Convent A team. Things did not improve. The next match was against Kings Farm, whose superior passing and finishing saw them cruise to a 2-0 victory, despite an excellent performance by Joseph at left back.
The ten teams had been divided into two groups, with the top two schools qualifying for the semi finals. Having registered just one point from the first two games, the third match against Cobham was particularly important. Mid-way through the second half, a familiar story appeared to be recurring – a couple of good chances had been missed, and the time was ticking away. As was to be a theme for the morning, the defence, led by Kabi, was holding up well, and when they repelled another Cobham attack, the ball found its way to Christopher. Gaining a few yards, he passed to Adam who took the ball down the left wing. As the defender advanced on him, he slipped it to Mitchell, who hit it first time and watched it sail over the goalkeeper’s head and into the back of the net.

The next few minutes saw the team do something they had not been required to do all season – defend a lead. It was therefore with some relief that the final whistle went to signal their first victory.

The team presumed that only a victory in the last game, against Holy Trinity, would give them a chance of progressing. They moved to the ‘sloping pitch’, which appeared to suit their style. Defending deeply, they trusted in the attacking players’ ability to use their pace and skill. However, they could not have predicted the goal that was to prove to be the winner. Collecting the ball well in his own half, Adam embarked on a mazy dribble that took him through the defence and score a genuinely spectacular goal. A few nervous moments, during which Ryan excelled himself in goal, preceded the final whistle.

Vigo now had to rely on other results to determine their destiny. If Kings Farm won their final game, they would have progressed at the team’s expense. Their 0-0 draw therefore was greeted with some joy by the team and their families.

Being second in their group meant that Vigo would have to play the top team in the other group. St Botolph’s, who had one three, and drawn one of their four matches, had every reason to be confident. However, once again, the team used the slope to their advantage. Kicking down hill in the first half, the scores were level, but soon into the second half, Adam was back to his old tricks, storming through the defence and, following a save from the goalkeeper, flicking the ball into the back of the net.

Incessant pressure on the Vigo goal followed. The post was struck, Luke got in some excellent tackles, and corner followed corner. With a minute to go, Adam once again picked the ball up on the left, advanced on the goalkeeper, and calmly rolled the ball into the back of the net. There was barely time for play to be restarted when the referee’s whistle blew to signal full time and Vigo’s advancement into the final, and a re-match with Holy Trinity, who had seen off the runners up of the other group in the semi-finals.

From the start of the game, it was clear that the five games that had preceded the final had taken its toll on both teams. Try as they might, neither team could re-discover the form that had taken them so far, indeed it was Holy Trinity who looked most likely to score, with a corner count running into double figures. However, Vigo held firm, with Cameron once again putting in a strong performance in defence. Ten minutes rapidly elapsed, and the prospect of extra time was realised. Two minutes each way would follow – if the teams remained level, the trophy would be shared.

The first half of extra time saw Vigo’s best chance. Adam’s pace once again took him clear of the defence, but an act of desperation from Trinity’s goalkeeper saw him handle the ball just outside the area. Christopher was entrusted with the responsibility of the direct free kick. His left-footed contact was good, but the ball failed to swerve sufficiently into the corner of the net, and the chance was gone.

The rest of the game was played out without a goal, and the whistle confirmed that the Devenish trophy would be shared. Cameron collected the shield on behalf of Luke, Cameron, Joseph, Adam, Ryan, Christopher and Mitchell. Some very tired, but happy footballers made their way back home for a well-deserved rest. They had represented the school with distinction – we are all very proud of them.

Computers 4Africa

Once again we have donated our old computers, those computers which are no longer compatible with our updated system, to Computers 4Africa. They send refurbished PCs to schools in Africa. This not only helps reduce our landfill here in the UK, but also helps the under privileged children there.

Birdwatching Day 2

After setting up bird feeders and tables in the previous week, Vigo Schools' birdwatching day arrived with a great deal of anticipation and excitement. Accompanied by tally charts (and pictures to help us) we visited various viewpoints set up around school to keep a careful lookout for our feathered visitors.

Woodpeckers, nuthatches, blue tits, pigeons, sparrows and blackbirds were among those seen in varying numbers.

The afternoon saw the children creating models of birds from junk materials. The models were judged and the winners announced in Friday's assembly.

Mr Barber took the winning entries to Millbrook Garden Centre.

Bird Watching Day

Vigo Village School Bird-watching Day

On Wednesday 23rd January, we are going to have a bird watching day. For an hour in the morning, everyone will be looking out of their windows, and trying to work which birds are which. The results will go towards the R.S.P.B.’s bird-watching survey. We have used a donation from the P.T.F.A. to buy feeders and bird food that should encourage the birds to visit (that was Kariss’ idea).

After the bird-watch, we will be doing some bird-related activities. One of them will be to make a model bird using only junk materials. The winner from each class will receive a prize, and be entered for the ‘Junk Bird Competition’ which is being run by Millbrook garden centre in Gravesend.

We would like you to collect all your junk materials that can be used to make the birds. Please bring anything suitable like boxes and plastic bottles – no metal or glass – to your classroom in plastic bags. If you would like to use anything that you bring in for your model, make sure you label it and keep it separate from everything else. You can start bringing the junk in tomorrow. In particular, can you bring in as many yoghurt pots that you can, but we won’t tell you why.

Welcome back to Term 3 2008

A warm welcome back to everyone.

Before the children came back to school, the teachers and support staff had 'Fire Safety' training. It was provided by the Kent Fire and Rescue Service and enabled all of us to experience how to use a fire extinguisher. I wish I'd had a camera handy!!

The Kent Fire and Rescue Services offer FREE Home Fire Safety Checks. This involves home fire safety advice and if required the installation of free 10 year smoke alarms.

Harvest Festival

Our Harvest Festival celebrations took place on Friday 5th October and were attended by some of our friends from the local community.

After the service there were refreshments for the visitors, most ably served by Year 6 children.

As always, the donated gifts were distributed among some of the older members of our community.

Year 4 had great fun at an Egyptian workshop courtesy of the Travelling Museum.

They were given the opportunity to handle a range of artefacts and learn about their purpose and use in Ancient Egyptian times.

The artefacts concerned mummification and the children learnt many interesting and informative facts about the Ancient process.

The children were also given the opportunity to try on some Ancient Egyptian costume.

Children in Need

To raise money for Children in Need this year, it was decided, that for a small donation, the children and staff could dress up as kings and queens for the day. There was a varied selection of characters ranging from Princess Fiona, Elvis, and the King of the Jungle(Mr Barber), to numerous Prince Charmings and Fairy Queens and.............

Year 4 had an enjoyable day and took part in many “Royal” activities.

They started by making crowns using strips of gold paper. They used bits of coloured paper to decorate them.

They then learnt about the Queen and looked at pictures of Buckingham Palace on the Internet.

After taking part in a catwalk show in assembly they made crown biscuits.

Once cooked they then decorated them with icing and silver, green, pink or blue balls

They also wrote about what they would do if they were King or Queen for the day.

Shake, Rattle and Roll

The Vigo children were treated to a real surprise on the morning of Monday 9th October. Rather than an assembly to start their week, they were entertained by the combined talents of Mark and Paul- collectively, Shake, Rattle and Roll. For an hour, the pair displayed their varied talents, from classical music to Scottish bagpipes. During the performance, a number of children were invited to try out some of the instruments, and to produce some genuinely excellent tunes.

Unfortunately, the hour went very quickly, and the children were making their way back to their classrooms. However, they did so in the knowledge that each class was going to have an opportunity to work with Mark and Paul in the hall. This time, all of the children took the chance to shake, rattle or roll, and a succession of beats and rythms echoed through the school.

Thank you to Mark and Paul for all your efforts, it was a fanstastic day, and we learnt a great deal from it. We really hope to see Shake, Rattle and Roll again in the not too distant future.

Roman Day

Last Friday Year 3 spent the day looking at Roman artefacts, listening to a talk on how the Romans used to live and learning how to march (only around the school hall). They also had a chance to dress like a Roman soldier.

Last Thursday Vigo Village School celebrated their Harvest Festival. The occasion, led by the Rev. Chris Noble, was shared with members of the local 'Pop-In Club' and their friends. The donations brought in by the children, were later distributed to some of the local community.

French Day at Vigo

Last Wednesday saw Vigo Village School go French.
The whole day was led by Mrs Randell, our French Club teacher. It included learning French songs, playing boules, making your own Eiffel Tower along with numerous other activities.
The children and staff were encouraged to dress with a French theme (red, white and blue). It was a very busy but enjoyable day and croissants were sampled by all at breaktime.

French club runs on Tuesday lunchtimes. More details are available from the school office.
